It’s difficult to imagine a YouTube star defeating one of the greatest boxers who has ever walked the planet in the ring, but we’ll find out if the seemingly impossible can happen on Sunday.
This Sunday on Showtime pay-per-view, undefeated boxing technician Floyd Mayweather will step into the ring with YouTuber Logan Paul in an eight-round exhibition at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami Gardens, Fla.
Considering the 50-0 Mayweather is coming out of retirement to fight someone who has never won a professional boxing match, Sunday’s event clearly isn’t about skill or competition. It’s about the nickname Mayweather has brazenly brandished for roughly a decade, “Money.”
Paul has a mere 0-1 record in the boxing ring, losing his only bout to fellow YouTube star KSI by split-decision in November 2019. Obviously, he has never stepped in the ring with anyone the caliber of Mayweather, so Sunday’s fight should be a route on paper, despite Mayweather turning 44 years old earlier this year. Although Paul is 18 years younger, roughly half a foot taller and should weigh much closer to the 190-pound weight limit for Sunday’s fight, there’s a reason Mayweather is heavily favored to win.
But while Mayweather is a heavy favorite to get his hand raised this weekend, is he tarnishing his legacy by accepting a fight with another boxing novice? Mayweather’s last fight in 2017 seemed like another stunt against UFC fighter Conor McGregor, which he won by 10th-round TKO. The spectacle was also about the dollars generated, as Mayweather reportedly pocketed more than $250 million for the bout. And while McGregor actually competed professionally in another combat sport, Paul has no such experience.
But what if Paul catches Mayweather on Sunday and drops him to the canvas? What if the YouTuber actually wins the fight? If that happens, consider Mayweather’s legacy officially besmirched. After producing one of the greatest careers in the history of boxing, losing to Paul would seemingly undue all the work he put in that has some people calling him the greatest boxer ever.
However the fight concludes, there will undoubtedly be plenty of viewers tuning in.
